The six most common types of Orthodontic braces

When you think of orthodontic treatment, then you can see different options to choose from. But picking the correct type of braces is important. Few people are lucky enough to have perfect teeth, but orthodontic treatment can make a huge difference. Your orthodontist may recommend any of the following types of braces or dental appliances to correct your misaligned teeth. Do not panic in case you need to get braces for your child.

Now, let us look at these braces and get lots of information on clear braces which your orthodontist may suggest.

Types of Orthodontic braces you can use:

Traditional Braces

It is the most common traditional braces since the early days. It is now lighter in weight and structure and made from high-grade stainless steel.

These metal brackets are attached to each tooth with the help of cement. The brackets are linked with a thin archwire, which puts pressure on the teeth and causes them to move slowly into the correct position. The archwires are connected to the brackets using tiny elastics that your orthodontist will change each time.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces work in the same way as traditional braces, but the brackets are clear, transparently made of ceramic material. These braces are less visible to others and the most popular choice for adults who need orthodontic treatment. Patients wearing these types of braces find that the elastics become discolored. Due to which sometimes it causes discoloration or marks on your teeth.

Self-Litigating Braces

Self litigating braces are currently the most popular type of braces with orthodontists because it provides gentler treatment and requires fewer dental visits. These braces use a slide mechanism instead of elastics to connect the archwires. These braces produce faster results because the teeth can move on their own. They do not require to be adjusted. This process causes less friction and pressure on the teeth and is less painful. The braces are also easier to keep clean.

Clear and Removable Aligners

Clear aligners are a type of orthodontic appliance that you can use instead of metal braces. This process involves a range of clear plastic aligners that resemble mouth guards, which can be custom-made for you. They are removable for eating and easy to clean. You can also change and make a newly made aligner every two weeks. Each new aligner takes the adjustment of your teeth and is Clear is also recommended for ongoing use after you complete your orthodontic treatment. These appliances help to maintain the results.

Forsus Appliances

In some children, Forsus appliances are used to correct overbites. These appliances have primarily replaced the use of headgear for braces, and there is a spring worn inside the cheeks that attaches to the braces to adjust the jaw positions.

Palatal Expanders

For patients with overcrowded teeth, two options to remedy to solve the problem –

  • Tooth extraction
  • Palatal expansion

Tooth extraction was done earlier but, now the orthodontist recommends wearing Palatal expansion for a while. A palatal expander is a device that fits your palate and applies pressure to the back of your upper molars to move your teeth.

With the proper care and application, any of these options could work to correct your misaligned teeth. However, every mouth is different. So, discuss with your orthodontist which option is the best fit for you or your child’s smile.
